Washing:

How to Wash a down sleeping bag your self,

isn’t hard and gives you a chance to inspect your sleeping bag for other problems.

And just takes some time and a process to follow,

to protect your down sleeping bag.

Do Not:

Don’t Use – Solvents used in dry cleaning.

It can strip the natural oils from the down feathers, degrading the feathers of its loft.

And the feathers ability to insulate against the cold.

Don’t use fabric softener, detergent or bleach product,

for they will be too rough on goose or duck down feathers.

Damaging the oil in the feathers causing your sleeping bag to lose its effectiveness.

Don’t place a sleeping bag in a top loading washing machine.

The agitator can tear or rip seams. 

You can use a top loader, if you find one without an agitator.

Laundromat:

Go to a laundromat with a large capacity or commercial size front loading machine and dryer.

No washing machines with an agitator.

Check washer for smoothness, and roughness could cause snags or tears.

Look in the detergent dispenser for the residue of old detergent, fabric softener, or bleach.

Find the cleanest machine and clean it out to your best ability with a rag and flush it out.

Run the machine on a short cycle without anything in it, to flush any soap, or solvents in a machine.

Can take you 4-6 hours to wash and dry.

Washing Your Down Sleeping Bag:

Make sure all zippers are zip up and all velcro fasteners are properly closed.

Set the temperature of the water to low or warm and wash on gentle or delicate cycle.

that won’t damage the oils in the down bag.

Drying:

• Dry on low heat.
• Toss in tennis balls (4 to 6) your choice, more is fine.

• After first dry pull out fell it for wet spots and work out clumping with your hands.
• Put back into the dryer, for second drying cycle lowest temperature.
• Add the tennis balls back into the dryer.
• Continue with the same routine of working out clumps and starting drying again, till completely dry.

Hand Washing Down Sleeping Bag

Hand washing your down sleeping bag would be better done, in a bathtub.

Gives you space, and ability to make sure it is clean and chemical, or solvent proof.

• Rinse you bathtub, no soaps.
• Fill up with lukewarm water.
• Mix in 100 ml of Nixwax (Recommend to use gloves)
• Place sleeping bag in a tub, and use your hands to agitate and scrub sleeping bag by hand.
• Drain tub and press out water from the sleeping bag.
• Fill a tub with cool warm water to rinse out your sleeping bag.
• Let the sleeping bag sit in a tub for 15 minutes to finish draining.
• Press out remaining water.

Gather up sleeping bag, with arms underneath to support bag,

bundling up into a ball.

For the weight of water, could ripping seams. 

Run through a home dryer, if you have one.

If not take to the laundromat. 

Dry on low, heat, with 6 tennis balls.  

You can use air dry but will take a longer time to dry.

After drying and cooling down.

Seal your clean sleep bag away, to keep clean and protect your down sleeping bag.
