What is a Point and Shoot Camera?

What Makes the Best Easy to Use Point and Shoot Digital Camera

Also known as a compact camera, a point and shoot are a still camera which is basic and easy to master. Most of them use free lenses or autofocus, as well as automatically taking care of the exposure options and whether or not you need to use flash. A point and shoot are one of the best-selling camera types since they are perfect if you want an easy camera for parties, vacations, reunions or other events, and if you do not consider yourself a photographer. Using this type of camera, you will be able to take great photos with minimal effort. These cameras are also good for kids, to use as their first camera. If the camera gets broken, it will not cost a lot to replace.
So how do you use one? It is easy – just point the camera and whatever you wish to photograph, press the shutter button and the camera will adjust the shutter speed, focus, light sensitivity and aperture automatically. These cameras are also small enough to fit in your pocket, until the bulky professional SLR models. When shopping for a point and shoot camera, a lot of people ask about megapixels first, assuming that is the most important question, although not many people are going to make prints huge enough to take advantage of a high number of megapixels.

More important is the sensor size. Having too many pixels on a smaller image sensor (the kind found in compact cameras) means your low-light photos will not be as sharp. Some point and shoot cameras have larger image sensors, but these tend to cost more. As with most things, you get what you pay for. It is possible to pick up a great point and shoot model for a couple of hundred dollars, or even under a hundred.

Can You Really Get Good Pictures with a Point and Shoot?

Just because your friend is carrying around his cumbersome digital SLR and you have a tiny point and shoot camera in your pocket, does that necessarily mean his pictures are going to be better? No, it does not. A point and shoot are small and light. This means you can have it in your pocket all the time.
Whenever you see something worth photographing you will have your camera handy. Your friend will not want to carry two or three pounds of the camera around his neck all the time. Most SLR owners (at least the amateur ones) will still be using the low-contrast zoom lens which came with their camera instead of upgrading, which means the lens on your point and shoot will be just as good.

All About Flash and Lighting

The pop-up flash on an SLR is the primary light, and although this can result in good shots, you can be creative with a point and shoot and choose various lighting techniques to showcase your subjects. A point and shoot have ‘fill-flash’ which is a great way to combine ambient light with the flash light, for more natural-looking photos.

Switch the flash off, and the shutter will stay open just long enough to allow enough light in to get a good photo. Leave it on and you either get a better picture or bleached-out looking faces. Experiment to see which you prefer but using flash when it is dark is a general rule and not always the best method.

So Who Has the Best Camera?

You are not going to be carrying a lot of different lenses around with you, so there are a lot of things your friend can do with his SLR that you cannot do with your camera, but a point and shoot has advantages that a big SLR does not, which is why your photographing friend is likely to have one of those in his pocket too, even if he does not admit to it right away!
